newVoices Sings! featured at Flag Day Parade
Please join us for our next signature community singing event “newVoices Sings!” just prior to the Flag Day Parade in Houdini Plaza, Downtown Appleton on June 9th, 2018. More than a sing-along, the lines are blurred between audience and performer as newVoices singers and guest artists will teach the audience simple harmonies to well-known songs and then singers and audience members will perform them together. We held the first newVoices Sings! event in November and attracted more than 300 participants. The event is part live concert and part social experiment. “Technology has made us socially dislocated,” said Jason Henderson, executive director of newVoices. “Families used to sing around the piano or watch special TV shows together, but now we have fewer opportunities to share experiences. Singing together is a fun, simple way to connect and create bonds,” he said. The event will be held in conjunction with the Flag Day Parade and a ceremony dedicating “first day of issue” for the new forever stamp. Music will feature patriotic songs and folk songs selected by newVoices Associate Conductor Dan Van Sickle who will lead the crowd in singing melody and harmony. The event is based on similar events in larger cities designed to unite people through group singing.“Even if you don’t think you can sing, you can sing this,” said Dan Van Sickle, newVoices assistant conductor. “This is an event where anyone can participate and our singers will help you do your best.”The stamp dedication ceremony starts at 11:30 in Houdini Square in downtown Appleton, “newVoices Sings!” will start at 12:30 and the parade is expected to make it’s way to downtown Appleton following the community sing. The “newVoices Sings!” Flag Day event is sponsored by Community First Credit Union.
